2021 Small Farmer of the Year Finalist!

We are so honored to have been nominated by our friend Eddy Labus at the Watauga Extension for Small Farmer of the Year 2021!

The announcement will be made LIVE at 1 pm on March 24. We hope you’ll join us as we wait to see who the winner is! There will be a live stream event to join from the comfort of your home.

Lee Rankin, our owner and founder, is one of TWO finalists for this amazing award presented by North Carolina A&T State University as part of their annual Small Farms Week program.

While 2020 was a challenging year on all fronts, Lee and the rest of the team at Apple Hill Farm worked hard to make keep the animals and our customers as our top priority. Even with the uncertainty of a global pandemic, we focused our energy on continuing to make our farm sustainable, eco-friendly, and above all safe for our animals and guests. We continued to safely work with our community to provide education and resources to other farms, and diversified our offerings here on the farm to help Apple Hill Farm continue with our mission.

At Apple Hill Farm, we believe we are living in a world of distraction and overwhelm. People are disconnected from themselves and feel helpless. Visitors to Apple Hill Farm find joy and connection through our animals and the experience of a real working farm. Our tour guides lead the way for people to leave with a smile on their face and memories to share.

Small Farms Wee is a celebration of small-scale agriculture designed to help farmers thrive.

Each year, Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T celebrates the crucial role of small farmers in North Carolina’s $91.8 billion agriculture sector with Small Farms Week. First held in 1986, Small Farms Week includes workshops, tours, farming demonstrations and recognition of a Small Farmer of the Year.

Small Farms Week is held in March and has focused on techniques to lengthen the growing season, pest management, safer and more sustainable practices, growing food without pesticides, urban horticulture, and more. The week culminates with a luncheon and talk by a speaker with connections to small agriculture.

Each year at Small Farms Week, Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T honors one of the state’s farmers as North Carolina’s Small Farmer of the Year. The award recognizes a farmer who is an innovator in livestock or crop production and marketing, a leader involved in contributing time and other resources to build their community, a steward of the environment who protects and enhances natural resources, and a wise businessperson running a farm business in an entrepreneurial manner.

Holidays at Apple Hill Farm: 2020

Happy Holidays from Apple Hill Farm!

As with most things this year, the holidays on the farm will look a little different from previous years. We are still keeping our focus on helping our visitors unplug from the hectic world, and reconnect to the things that really matter in life. We continue to keep our tour groups small so that all of our visitors get plenty of personal attention from both our tour guides and our animals!

In an effort to keep everyone safe, we will not be offering complimentary hot chocolate or other refreshments this year for our Christmas event, but we are still decking the halls!

Farm visitors will be able to purchase hand tied wreaths and table top trees from our Christmas shop beginning November 20th. In addition to our regular alpaca socks and other gifts, we also have a selection of Christmas ornaments and goodies in our expanded Christmas shop! Support Apple Hill Farm, buy local, and give your loved ones a unique gift this Christmas. Christmas products and greenery will be available beginning November 20.

We are not accepting reservations any further out than 30 days in advance.

We have just restocked our Circular Firm Kollage Square Knitting Needles, as well as our Kollage Square Pointed Crochet Hooks. These guys are super popular and will go quickly on this year’s virtual fiber fairs!

Check our Inventory and place your order here: https://applehillfarmnc.com/product-category/alpacayarn/needle-and-hook-nook/

If you aren’t familiar, the Kollage Square Needles and Kollage Square Crochet Hooks are user friendly, ergonomic, and gentle on your hands. The unique square shape not only makes the needles or hooks easier to grasp, but they also create more uniform stitches!

The Original Four Sided Kollage SQUARE Knitting Needle Precise points and smooth joins that swivel. Each square needle is laser etched with size and length. The new firm cable is similar to most other circular cables out in the market, except a little softer so it’s ready to knit with right out of the package.

The unique square shape of each Kollage square needle makes them easier on your hands and create more uniform stitches. They are ergonomically designed and are perfect for slippery yarns or if you knit tightly. These square needles are ideal for knitters who have arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or stiffness in their hands and fingers.

Always smooth, never tarnishes. Kollage Square Needles are crafted with anodized aluminum, which not only gives them a beautiful titanium finish, but guarantees that your needles will never lose their smooth surface or develop worrisome tarnish.
Due to the difference in Square Kollage Square knitting needles to traditional knitting needles, we strongly recommend you knit a swatch for gauge. Please note: Generally knitters go up one needle size for circulars and DPN’s to obtain gauge.

Every kollage SQUARE™ needle purchased enables their parent organization Career Services, to expand employment opportunities for individuals with barriers by working with employers and community partners.  By providing specialized supports, they help people pursue their work goals.   We are truly knitting together and connecting the world of needle arts/hobby craft with an inclusive social mission!

Career Services embraces the connection between knitting and their employment services; metaphorically speaking Knitting and job development share four recurring themes; starting something new, repeating a pattern (skills development), changing things (coping with job expectations/changes), and creating an ending (finding employment).

Over the years Career Services has been able to service thousands of individuals who face barriers to employment, to provide them with training, real work experiences, community placement opportunities, and one on one coaching.  We are “knitting lives together” by assisting barriered individuals to practice and master the stitches they use daily to create employment.
