Foundations in Painting at Apple Hill Farm

We are so thrilled to be adding a new educational offering to the farm for 2021! We hope you’ll join us!

Foundations in Painting

4 week class

$200

Are you looking for a jump start or ready to begin a new chapter? Are you looking for a safe outdoors space to let your creative side free? Do you just need a change of pace and a chance to unplug from technology? Can you imagine painting outdoors, surrounded by birdsong and grazing alpacas?

Join Foundations in Painting for an outdoor, informal but comprehensive exploration of painting with acrylics!  Carlette Peters is partnering with Apple Hill Farm to bring you this safe and socially distant class held outside in the extraordinary & beautiful apple orchard at  Apple Hill Farm. Classes are limited to no more than 4 participants and face masks are required, so not only will you have lots of room, but you’ll also have plenty of attention and feedback during your class time.

Over 4 weeks, Individuals will acquire skills to test their old or new interest in painting.  In the class we will “learn” to paint, with the goal being to paint independently subjects or images of your choice.   It’s a wonderful opportunity to consider…. the process of growing is the magic.

Your art guide, Carlette Beam Peters, is an educated, seasoned art explorer who loves to share the magic of making art and of translating what you see or feel onto a surface.  She will demystify the fear of creating.  She will tear down the walls of intimidation related to “outcome”.  She will share as much as she can to help you learn to paint.

There will be three sessions offered for 2021. To join in, you will register for one session of 4 consecutive meetings. Classes are rain or shine. There will be one make-up day offered in case of class cancellation due to severe weather. Class will be held in the picturesque orchard at Apple Hill Farm, under a tent for shelter. While we won’t be able to see you in person, we’ll still be able to live chat with you and help answer your questions about our farm products! We just restocked our Kollage Square Needles and Hooks, are restocking Survival Alpaca Socks in size Medium, and just added a few great yarn deals as well! You don’t want to miss out.

The Virtual Fiber Fest hall will be open from March 12 to March 14, 2021. Vendors will be manning their booths throughout the day!

2021 Small Farmer of the Year Finalist!

We are so honored to have been nominated by our friend Eddy Labus at the Watauga Extension for Small Farmer of the Year 2021!

The announcement will be made LIVE at 1 pm on March 24. We hope you’ll join us as we wait to see who the winner is! There will be a live stream event to join from the comfort of your home.

Lee Rankin, our owner and founder, is one of TWO finalists for this amazing award presented by North Carolina A&T State University as part of their annual Small Farms Week program.

While 2020 was a challenging year on all fronts, Lee and the rest of the team at Apple Hill Farm worked hard to make keep the animals and our customers as our top priority. Even with the uncertainty of a global pandemic, we focused our energy on continuing to make our farm sustainable, eco-friendly, and above all safe for our animals and guests. We continued to safely work with our community to provide education and resources to other farms, and diversified our offerings here on the farm to help Apple Hill Farm continue with our mission.

At Apple Hill Farm, we believe we are living in a world of distraction and overwhelm. People are disconnected from themselves and feel helpless. Visitors to Apple Hill Farm find joy and connection through our animals and the experience of a real working farm. Our tour guides lead the way for people to leave with a smile on their face and memories to share.

Small Farms Wee is a celebration of small-scale agriculture designed to help farmers thrive.

Each year, Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T celebrates the crucial role of small farmers in North Carolina’s $91.8 billion agriculture sector with Small Farms Week. First held in 1986, Small Farms Week includes workshops, tours, farming demonstrations and recognition of a Small Farmer of the Year.

Small Farms Week is held in March and has focused on techniques to lengthen the growing season, pest management, safer and more sustainable practices, growing food without pesticides, urban horticulture, and more. The week culminates with a luncheon and talk by a speaker with connections to small agriculture.

Each year at Small Farms Week, Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T honors one of the state’s farmers as North Carolina’s Small Farmer of the Year. The award recognizes a farmer who is an innovator in livestock or crop production and marketing, a leader involved in contributing time and other resources to build their community, a steward of the environment who protects and enhances natural resources, and a wise businessperson running a farm business in an entrepreneurial manner.
